Access to clean drinking water is crucial whether for everyday use or in emergency situations. Unfortunately, clean water isnt always readily available .Thats where a water distiller comes in handy .While commercial distillers can be expensive ,you can easily build your own at home for a fraction of the cost .This DIY project helps you to build your own stovetop water purifier for just $20.

STEP 1 : Materials Required

  • A stainless steel tea kettle: This will act as the boiling chamber.

  • Copper tubing: This will channel the steam and cool it down.

  • A glass jar: This will collect the condensed water.

  • PVC connectors: These will connect the copper tubing to the kettle and the jar.

  • Coupler: This will create a tight seal between the kettle spout and the copper tubing.

  • Hose clamps: These will secure the coupler.

STEP 2 : Assemble the Condenser

Connect one end of the copper tubing to a PVC connector that fits the kettle spout.Bend the copper tubing into an arch shape, ensuring it’s long enough to reach the collection jar with a downward slope.Attach another PVC connector to the other end of the copper tubing, making sure it fits into the mouth of the glass jar.

Finally the coupler is connected to one end of the PVC connector, acting as a bridge between the kettle and the condenser.Place a hose clamp around the coupler where it connects to the PVC connector. Tighten the clamp firmly using a screwdriver or wrench to create a leakproof seal.

STEP 3 : Connect the Kettle and the Collection Jar

Attach the copper tubing with the coupler to the kettle spout .The other end of the copper tubing, forming the exit of the condenser, is also connected to a PVC connector. This connector is then inserted into the mouth of the glass collection jar.

There is no need for a tight seal here, as some steam may escape. However, ensure the connector is positioned to direct the condensed water droplets into the jar.

STEP 4 : Distillation Process

Fill the kettle with the dirty/salty water you want to purify. Place the kettle on your heat source and bring the water to a boil.As the water boils, steam will travel through the copper tubing.

The steam will cool and condense inside the tubing, turning back into water. The purified water will drip into the collection jar.

The copper tubing and the kettle will become extremely hot during the distillation process. Avoid touching them with bare hands.Also,do not use a plastic jar or container for collecting the distilled water, as it may melt or warp due to the heat.

A larger glass jar will provide more surface area for condensation, resulting in a higher yield of distilled water.
